We live in a society that is dived deeply into a variety of applications, where a lot of us are constantly jumping from one app to another because somebody else is using it, or because we have heard that it got 5 stars in a review. However, if tools are only means to accomplish our goals, shouldn’t we hesitate to start using these new applications that come out each day, and rather try to have a specific objective of aiming before using them?

A lot of successful people that are really good at the things that they do have not become so skillful at their craft based on the most advanced and the highest rated applications that are in Google Play, or App Store. The author of “Games of Thrones” uses a very old computer to write, and he hasn’t stopped using it, though he does not lack the money to buy a modern computer to use it for his writing projects. They have focused on the basics and have been working systematically with a courage and determination to go beyond their comfort zone, and a large portion of this endeavor is considerably consisted of a lot of struggle from the inside. They do not want to waste their time on jumping from one tool to another, but want to continue using something that has turned out to be beneficial for their job.

Before using a tool that is grabbing our attention and is bringing us dilemmas, we should try to ponder whether this tool is going to serve you something that is meaningful, that relates to your current objectives. If it does, then you can go ahead and using it. If it doesn’t, it is obvious that you should abandon it without turning your head back, because it can simply be a distraction and might turn you into its slave, by preventing you to focus on things that really matter. Before using a tool, try to ask yourself if it really helps you solve any problem that is currently bothering you. Life is short to waste it on things that do not make a difference.

Having said that, if we want to become the top performers at our craft, it is not usually a matter of using the latest gadgets or tools, though I am not suggesting to abandon all of them, but rather the resolve and determination to commit working day in and day out, without quitting. Whether you use the latest tools or not most of the time is not directly followed by the results that we are usually after.
